Despotovac
Despotovac is one of those quiet Serbian towns that surprises you with how much beauty surrounds it. Set in the rolling hills of central Serbia, it serves as the gateway to some of the country’s most remarkable cultural and natural landmarks. It’s not a big place, but that’s exactly its charm: everything feels close, peaceful, and deeply rooted in history. Just outside Despotovac rises Manasija, a fortified medieval monastery built by Despot Stefan Lazarević. Its stone walls and towers look like something out of a fantasy novel, while the church inside holds some of the finest frescoes of the Morava school. Visiting Manasija feels like stepping into a preserved fragment of Serbia’s medieval golden age.
